Alert to pregnant women and nursing mothers taking Reglan

www.baumhedlundlaw.com Reglan® is not FDA-approved for morning sickness, yet the acid reflux drug, also known as metoclopramide, is being prescribed “off label” to treat nausea and vomiting in pregnant women. It is also being prescribed off-label to increase milk production in nursing mothers. Metoclopramide has been recommended to nursing mothers for over 20 years, yet Reglan’s label states that Reglan can pass into breast milk and may harm the baby. Metoclopramide has been linked to tardive dyskinesia. The FDA issued a black box warning in 2009 against metoclopramide, adding stronger language about the risk of tardive dyskinesia. It is only approved to be used on a short term basis. Anyone suffering tardive dyskinesia symptoms after taking Reglan should contact their doctor and also a Reglan injury lawyer to seek compensation for their injuries.

Are Acid Reflux Symptoms More Common in Women?

Article by Nat Brown

Acid reflux symptoms in women and men are basically the same, however women often feel they are more prone to acid reflux disease. However, a condition called ‘Barrett’s Esophagus’ is most commonly found in men and is a result of a chronic regurgitation of acid from the stomach into the lower esophagus. Having symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) for more than 10 years can increase the risk of Barrett’s Esophagus.

Acid reflux disease occurs when the sphincter of the stomach is not working correctly and stomach acid seeps back up into the esophagus. As with gastroesophageal reflux disease, where stomach contents leak back from the stomach, there can be many uncomfortable acid reflux symptoms. Acid reflux symptoms in women that are often reported include heartburn, regurgitation, chest pain, hoarseness and in severe cases bleeding when stomach acid causes erosion of the esophagus.

Acid reflux symptoms in women can be treated in a variety of ways depending on their severity. Eating a healthy diet consisting of smaller meals and high in alkaline foods as opposed to acid foods is considered a cornerstone of treatment of acid reflux problems. Treatment of mild GERD symptoms and acid reflux symptoms in women like heartburn are often combated with over the counter antacids like Rolaids, Maalox, Pepto-Bismol, Riopan and Alka-Seltzer.

What Causes Acid Reflux Symptoms In Women?

What Causes Acid Reflux Symptoms In Women?

You know the drill — it begins with pregnancy and as the baby progresses in size, all of your internal organs get smashed, punched, kicked and moved in ways you never thought possible; but does this lead to the cause of acid reflux symptoms in women?

It Is More Than Just What You Eat
Have you ever wondered why some men can eat anything? More than likely they could eat nails and eliminate them from their systems without experiencing any harm at all. Kind of reminds you of the family dog, doesn’t it? It seems they have guts made out of cast iron. Not so for most women, who experience fluctuations in their digestive system as continually as the sun goes up and the sun goes down. One day it’s diarrhea, the next constipation.

The stomach rumbles and burns causing uncomfortable bloating, pain, gas, flatulence (oh my!) a sour taste in the mouth and a burning sensation in your throat. You’ve quit eating all the foods you like, and yet you still suffer the symptoms of acid reflux. What gives?

The Body’s pH Balance Is Upset
What does this mean? pH stands for potential of hydrogen. Hydrogen is a gas found in the sun — no wonder you’re burning up inside. Your body’s pH balance is measured by a scale of zero to 14 with 7.0 being a neutral condition. Below 7.0 is acidic, above 7.0 is alkaline. The ideal range for the body’s pH is 6.1 to 7.5, preferably more alkaline at 7.4.
