Typically, you want to stay away from acidic foods (tomatoes, citrus), and fatty foods. Acidic because acid is what’s hurting your esophagus, and fatty because it slows the transit of food out of your stomach….Other foods to avoid are coffee, chocolate, peppermint, onion, and garlic because these actually relax the sphincter between your esophagus and stomach, allowing the contents of your stomach to splash up into your esophagus. Proportion does play a role, too….smaller meals have less of a chance to back up. Weight is an issue too…the more fat in your abdominal area, the more is pressing up on your stomach. And some people have luck sleeping with the head of their bed elevated 6 inches or so (if they have problems at night). If you haven’t already, go see a gastroenterologist to check out your esophagus and stomach….make sure you don’t have any serious damage done by prolonged exposure to acid…this can lead to esophageal cancer if not treated with a simple pill.

I am a fifteen almost sixteen year old girl, and I want to start loosing weight. I am 5’4″ and weigh almost 190 pounds (though people think I am lying because they say I look about 150). I am determined to lose this extra flab and I have even started a nice, healthy diet, but it is difficult for me.
First off, I have a bad combination of acid reflux disease and developing Crohn’s Disease, and lactose intolerance that prevents me from eating some food that would be good for me, but gives me nausea and “stomach problems” to put it lightly.
Also, I have anemia and a very bad case of asthma (I cant walk from one end of out tiny school to the other without taking my inhaler) these prevent me from getting enough excercise because I quickly become weak and my chest tightens and I double over coughing.
I am not blaming my illnesses for being overweight, but they get in the way of me getting healthy. Please help! What should I do?

Instead of eating three large meals, try to eat five to six smaller meals spread throughout the day.
Your sleeping position can also cause acid to reflux. Sleep with your head and torso elevated to keep the food down in your stomach. Keep yourself comfortable by putting a pillow under your head and your back. Also, try to avoid going to bed within two hours of eating. Wait at least two hours before lying down to give your body some time to digest the food. As a general rule, go to bed two to three hours after you eat to mitigate heartburn in pregnancy.
