Q&A: Could this be from ovarian cysts?
Question by Abby: Could this be from ovarian cysts?
I have brought this up to 2 different doctors, about 4 times now, and every time my concerns get dismissed as “you’re just tiny, you’re going to be irregular when you look at yourself in the mirror” or “it might be a little ovarian cyst swelling, that’s all” or “you’re young, you’re fine.”
Here’s what’s wrong:
On the left side of my abdomen, right near my hipbone (a little farther up and about 1/2 in. inward), i have a small amount of “swelling” not sure what to call it. Then if you follow that down and to the right (so toward the belly button) just another 1/2 in. there is a little more “swelling. When you look at my stomach as a whole, in front of the mirror, the left side is slightly bigger. No pain, BUT if i lean down far (at times) i feel a weird sensation, and sometimes when i scratch that area it feels likes it’s almost numb, like slightly tingly. Again no pain. The only time i feel “pain” in that area is a full or bloated feeling when i’m cramping before my period and i sometimes get a nagging “pain” in that area, but none of it really hurts too bad. Sometimes it will feel bloated in that area if i need to go to the bathroom really bad or if i have a lower back ache (which i get a lot).
I have NO idea what this is, i have looked up that area online and looks like just my intestines are there. I do have a lot of acid reflux and heartburn/indigestion, but not sure if the two are related.
Does anyone have any idea what would cause this? I plan of going to prompt care soon, just so i can get a second opinion, but until then, does anyone have any ideas? I’m a 30 year old female (just turned 30 a few weeks ago), regular periods, 98/99 lbs. and 5’2. I have had ovarian cysts in the past, not sure if i still have any or not. My doctor told me there is no sense checking every few months, because it’s normal for women to get them.
I do go to a regular family doctor, she is both my GYN and regular doctor.
Natural heartburn remedies?
Question by Alexandrea: Natural heartburn remedies?
I’m 15 weeks pregnant (first one) and it seems like I’ll go a few days with no problems at all and then all of a sudden I’ll have an entire day with constant heartburn, like 24 hours straight. I’ve been eating pretty much the same things day in and day out, so I don’t think it’s anything I’m eating. I’ve heard it can just be the pressure the baby puts on your other organs. Anyway, I’m looking for some good natural home remedies that are safe for the baby and that actually work! Thanks for your help!
I tried tums (doc recommended) but they didn’t even touch it! I hope this doesn’t last the entire time lol! Thanks all for your great suggestions!

Acid Reflux Weight Loss – Part 4 Kick Off Your Acid Reflux Disease Diet and Weight Loss Program
If you suffer from acid reflux disease, then getting a diet program started can seem challenging, considering the number of foods that are restricted due to acid reflux symptoms. However, as long as you arm yourself with the right tools and information, your diet should be much more rewarding than you may first expect.
Your first goal should be to discover what foods you can eat. These should be foods that are not only ‘waistline friendly’, but they should also be foods you can eat without experiencing symptoms of acid reflux disease. Though everybody has their own ‘trigger’ foods to which their symptoms react, the following foods are generally considered to be suitable on their own or as ingredients in acid reflux disease diet recipes:
- Fresh apples
- Apple juice
- Bananas
- Baked potatoes
- Carrots
- Green beans
- Peas
- Skinless chicken breast
- Extra lean ground beef
- Egg whites
- Egg substitute
- White fish
- Feta or goat cheese
- Fat-free cream cheese
- Fat free sour cream
- Low fat soy cheese
- Multigrain bread
- Bran or oatmeal cereal
- Pretzels
- Corn bread
- Graham crackers
- Brown rice
- Rice cakes
- Jelly beans
- Red licorice
- Baked potato chips
- Water
- Herbal teas (not peppermint)
These are by no means all of the foods that are safe to eat for losing weight and avoiding symptoms of acid reflux disease. However, these are among the more popular and have the added benefit of being easy to find at the local grocery store.

Acid Reflux Cures- Discover the Best Natural Heartburn Remedies
Before we learn about the acid reflux cures, or about the natural heartburn remedies, we need to understand what acid reflux means and how exactly it is caused. Well, the food that we consume travels from our mouth to our stomach via the food pipe or the esophagus. The peristaltic movement of the muscles in the alimentary canal, allow the movement of the bolus only in one direction, that is, from the mouth towards the intestine, and finally the anus. The movement of the bolus from the esophagus to the stomach is controlled by a ring of muscle known as the ‘Lower Esophageal Sphincter Muscle’, which is present just at the juncture of the esophagus and the stomach. It usually allows the food to pass only one way from the mouth to the stomach. Its main function is to prevent the contents of the stomach to travel back into the food pipe, and thereby aid in the digestion process. However, sometimes, due to a spicy and fatty diet, or due to a poor lifestyle (late night dinner, just before going to bed; a very heavy and stuffing dinner; alcohol consumption, too many chocolates, obesity, very little water intake, etc), the lower esophageal sphincter muscle gets weakened and the stomach contents tend to leak back into the esophagus. When the contents of the stomach (and the digestive juices that are present in the stomach), leak back or get refluxed into the esophagus, then it is known as acid reflux or GERD, which results in a painful burning sensation in the esophageal area and even in the throat. This painfulness or burning sensation that arises in the chest, right at the back of the sternum, is known as ‘heartburn’.
With so many different types of acid reflux medicines available for treating heartburn and acid reflux symptoms, people often get confused while selecting the best acid reflux medicines, which can provide them with the most reliable and effective acid reflux cures. Moreover, prolonged use of these medicines, as in the case of chronic acid reflux patients is dangerous. For instance, prolonged use of antacids can lead to the formation of stones in the kidneys. So, it becomes even more difficult for people suffering from chronic acid reflux problem to identify and stick on with such a treatment option, which is not only safe (even on prolonged use), but is also capable of curing the root cause of the problem.
Making a Heartburn Food Plan
Making a Heartburn Food Plan
If you have heartburn you know there are certain foods that make your condition worse. That is why it is recommended that you have a heartburn food plan which outlines the food you can safely eat and avoid.
Heartburn happens when there is a reflux of liquid containing pepsin, to the esophagus and to the throat. The liquid that comes from the stomach is acidic, burning the lining of your esophagus. It this happens frequently, a visit to the doctor is recommended to help you cure this condition.
One of the things that are advised for you to do is, as mentioned, having a heartburn food plan. The ones you should avoid generally are those that are hard to be digested, since they put too much pressure on the stomach and the lower esophagus muscle, and those that can make the LES relax.
So what are the foods that cause heartburn? Take note of the following:

Question by Missy Baybee: how do I fix a GERD induced sore throat?
I have been taking medicine for a little over a week now for my GERD, (otherwise known as acid reflux), and I have this really awful sore throat. I’m not sick, and a sore throat is one of the symtoms of my condition. I’m not really allowed to take pain killers becasue they upset my stomach and make my GERD worse, so what can I do?

I’ve always found that drinking milk is a natural throat-coater. It creates a lot of extra mucus, which is what your body naturally creates to make a barrier between the acid and the lining of your throat. (This is why it’s good to drink milk after you eat spicy food). Not only does your body go into overdrive to produce mucus when you ingest dairy, but dairy is also full of mucus on its own (gross, but true).

When stomach acid is refluxed back from the stomach to the esophagus it causes a severe pain in the chest giving rise to heartburn. Stomach discomfort, chest pain, throat pain, sensing an acidic taste in the mouth and reflux are all symptoms of heart burn. Over the counter medications usually work for heartburns, especially antacids are very effective. However, it is not recommended to continue medication for over two months and as such home remedies can be used to combat heartburn on a long term basis.
Gingerroot can be very helpful when it comes to curing heartburn. It can absorb the acid and calms the nerves. It can be consumed in both natural as well as capsule form or can be added to the food and consumed. A section of herbs known as bitters which include gentian root, wormwood, and goldenseal can reduce the risks of heartburn. They can be taken either in capsule form or as a liquid extract. Aromatic herbs such as catnip and fennel are also known to cure heartburn. Herbs such as Irish moss, plantain, and slippery elm are also said to be able to cure heartburn.
The most common recipe for heartburn is to mix one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in half a glass of water and keep sipping it during meals. It can definitely help to cure heartburn. Consuming enzymes that can help speed up the digestion process is also a much recommended option. Papaya enzymes can be taken in a chewable capsule or as a fruit form after meals with a glass of water. Aloe Vera juice is also a good option when it comes to preventing heartburn as it can heal the intestinal tract.
